Bernd und Hilla Becher – Fotografen der unterkühlten Schönheit
Ihre Motive sind schlicht und alltäglich: Wassertürme und Gasbehälter, Fachwerkhäuser und Hochöfen, Fördertürme und Kohlesilos. Die Dinge, die sie fotografierten, haben ursprünglich auch unmittelbar mit ihrem Lebensumfeld zu tun. Wahrscheinlich lässt sich kaum nachvollziehen, welche kulturelle Leistung die beiden Fotografen durch ihre gemeinsame 40-jährige Arbeit vollbracht und was sie zur Wahrnehmung der Industriearchitektur beigetragen haben. Heute ist für uns selbstverständlich, dass stillgelegte Fördertürme und Gasbehälter als Zeugen einer untergehenden Industrie und als gelungene ästhetische Formen geschätzt und erhalten werden. Als aber Hilla und Bernd Becher in den 60er-Jahren begannen, ein systematisches Verzeichnis anonymer Skulpturen (wie sie es nannten) anzulegen, war der Denkmalsgedanke noch längst nicht auf diese Bauwerke übertragen worden……

Für das Bild “A Sudden Gust of Wind” nach Hokusai soll Wall monatelang nach geeigneten Material für die Kulisse gesucht und an ihr gearbeitet haben.
