About Egon Schiele

Egon Schiele (1890 – 1918) was only 28 years old when he died of the Spanish flu, but the extensive work he left behind had an enormous influence on the post-war art world and still disturbs viewers today. His style was considered as being provocative, often called pornographic, who shocked Viennese society and created some of the most striking portraits in art history.

About this artwork

The so-called Neulengbach affair of 1912 hit Egon Schiele completely unprepared. On 13 April he was arrested for the abduction and abuse of Thirteen-year-old Tatjana Georgette von Mossig. Although little remains of the original indictment, Schiele was sentenced to 24 days in prison for presenting an immoral drawing to the public. Schiele had pinned a leaf on the wall in the bedroom of his apartment, which attracted the wrath of the judge. During his imprisonment, Egon Schiele created a total of thirteen watercolor drawings between April 19 and 27,1912. Schiele’s favourite model and his partner Wally Neuzil brought him pencil and watercolours into custody (? Wally Neuzil – her life with Egon Schiele), and he was only able to use Gouache after his release. Of the “prison drawings”, the Albertina in Vienna has ten sheets on which his prison cell in Neulengbach, the corridor with broom and washbowls, the locked prison door with a view of trees, armchairs, handkerchiefs, and finally himself, which he titled with messages:”Inhibiting the artist is a crime, it means murdering germinating life”! (23.4.1912),”Prisoner!” (24.4.2912),”I will persevere for art and my beloved ones” (25.4.1912),”My walk leads over abysses” (1912). Whether the watercoloured drawing “Trieste Fishing Boat” (1912, Albertina, Inv. 31028) was also made in prison, as Arthur Roessler claimed in the so-called diary of Schiele (“Egon Schiele in prison”) in 1922, is controversial. It would be possible that it was also created during the summer stay at the sea in 1912 together with drawing “Steamships and sailboats in the port of Trieste” (1912, Albertina, Inv. 31121), which is why it is only presented in the following room in the current exhibition.
