About this Artwork A compilation of 3-D renderings of conventional weapons and weapons of mass destruction, Bombs is the latest in a series of artworks by Ai that address critical global conditions, including political conflicts and war, that have resulted in massive casualties and the displacement of more than 70 million refugees. The 50 bombs depicted here—developed by a variety of countries—range from a 1911 grenade to a guided nuclear missile created in 2019. Bombs is designed to be presented in a variety of mediums. In addition to this 72 x 48-inch print, it appeared as a monumental wallpaper installation in Ai Weiwei: Bare Life. The wallpaper will remain on view at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum through the spring 2020 season. About the Artist As his personal circumstances move in constant flux, Ai Weiwei (b. 1957) remains a cultural magnet. Renowned for his political activism and social media activity almost as much as for his social interventions, contemporary approach to the readymade, and knowledge of Chinese traditional crafts, Ai’s fame extends throughout and beyond the art world. Over the past two decades, the Chinese conceptual artist, activist, and exile Ai Weiwei has created art that addresses complex and sensitive themes of political, ethical, and social urgency. His artworks, which call upon both Western and Chinese cultural traditions, are deeply engaged with the history of art, drawing particularly on conceptualism and minimalism. Informed by the readymade—central to the work of Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol—his work questions the status of the work of art itself, blurring the lines between art and non-art, invention and appropriation, structure and openness, even fiction and fact.
