About this Artwork

The work of internationally acclaimed visual artist Olafur Eliasson (IS/DK, 1967) investigates perception, movement, embodied experience, and feelings of self. He is best known for striking installations such as the hugely popular The weather project (2003) in the Turbine Hall of Tate Modern, London, which was seen by more than two million people, and The New York City Waterfalls (2008), four large-scale artificial waterfalls which were installed on the shorelines of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

About the Artist

Olafur Eliasson, born 1967 in Copenhagen, of Icelandic parentage, studied at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, from 1989 to 1995. Early in his career he moved to Germany, establishing Studio Olafur Eliasson in Berlin. Internationally acclaimed, Eliasson lives and works in Copenhagen and Berlin. His studio functions as an interdisciplinary space, generating dialogues between art and its surroundings. Through ongoing studies of spatial and temporal matters, it explores how form is a carrier of content and seeks to enhance a general awareness of this relation. Olafur Eliasson belongs to a younger generation of artists who in the nineties explored and expanded the boundaries between art, science and nature and the perception thereof. For years, the artist has transferred natural phenomena such as water, light, wind, temperature and movement into the art context using simple technical aids, always clearly emphasizing for the viewer the technology involved. In his sculptures, installations, and photographs, Eliasson´s artistic interest is focused on dialogic processes occurring between the viewer and his perception.

About this Artwork

Two colour prints of the Seljalandsfoss waterfall in Iceland make up the work Contact is content at Seljalandsfoss. The choice of the Seljalandsfoss in this edition reflects the recurring motif of waterfalls within the artist’s oeuvre, beginning with his photo-documentation of them in Iceland in 1996 – when this image of Seljalandsfoss was taken – expanding to his installations Waterfall and Reverse waterfall in 1998, and culminating in the four massive artificial waterfalls the artist erected in the East River in 2008 as part of The New York City Waterfalls.

The prints mirror each other. The artist suggests framing the two prints separately and hanging them one above the other, with the sources of the two waterfalls abutting. This creates an abstract, Rorschach-like composition of a waterfall spilling upwards as well as downwards, although which image is the ‘actual’, non-inverted depiction of Seljalandsfoss is indeterminable. In this visual ambiguity, surreality arises from an otherwise predictable image, which is subverted within a double uncertainty: if it is the inverted print that hangs normally, then the ‘real’ Seljalandsfoss falls up. The prints come in a specially produced case, together with a copy of the artist’s book Contact is content, in an edition of one hundred.

In The glacier series, the massive glaciers are seen from the sky, at a distance where we can appreciated their magnitude; in order to see them in their entirety, we need to get away from them. Their incremental movement is a phenomenon we understand by the virtue of scientific knowledge, not of what we can see with the naked eye.
