About this Artwork

Olatz Schnabel (Lopez), the Basque-born, Paris-raised former model who for over 17 years was Schnabel’s muse and wife. This work is reflecting the Neo-Expressionism inaugurating a return to romantic and poetic subjects, and it is also linked to the art of Schnabels close friend Cy Twombly. In On July 5, 2011, the day of Cy Twombly’s death, Julian Schnabel painted a series of cruciform works as a tribute to Twombly, who was an important influencer of his early paintings. A style that he did refer to after his Plate Paintings during the period of1978–86, resisting the turn to traditional conventions of painting and sculpture. Throughout his career, he has sustained his use of found materials and chance-based processes, transforming the conventions of painting and opening the door for a new generation of young artists.

About Julian Schnabel

Julian Schnabel (b. 26 October 1951) is an American artist, Academy Award nominated and Golden Globe winning filmmaker. He lives and works in New York. Schnabel´s work is suffused with a volatile arising from the clash of dichotomous elements; contradicting aspects live as uneasy neighbors. Powered by this sense of imminent combustion, Schnabel´s poetic dissonance traverses unstable frontiers, fearless in the face of confrontation and experimentation. Throughout the unstable and shifting landscape he creates, Schnabel´s distinctive hand and voice remain constant, his attitude questioning. Schnabel´s archeological fascination with fragments and remnants is tempered by lyric expressiveness and painterly extravagance. He celebrates the residue of human existence, arranging antiquated architectural elements, a photographic portrait, primitive shards in a baroque theater of expansive gestures and luxurious color. Drama and violence further pervade Schnabel´s work via the marks he makes: the viewer often finds palpable evidence of the trajectory of paint-soaked rags thrown against surfaces, as in his “Lost Relative”.
