About this artwork

From its first appearance in his artist’s book Twentysix Gasoline Stations and its subsequent translation into a masterpiece of American painting in 1964 as Standard Station, Amarillo, Texas, the Standard gasoline station is arguably Ruscha’s most iconic image. Its stations ubiquitous across 20th Century America, John D. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil was at one point the largest company in the world. Even when broken up by the federal government into seven smaller companies, “Baby Standard” gasoline stations continued to line Route 66 from Los Angeles to Ruscha’s family home in Oklahoma City until 1984, when the brand became Chevron. Ruscha recorded two of these stations in Twentysix Gasoline Stations, which promoted his interest in closely observing the banal and the mundane, the taken-for-granted and the overlooked. Taking a rather unremarkable source photograph, Ruscha transforms it with a radical foreshortening which centres the composition around a plunging diagonal line creating his idealised “standard” gasoline station.

About the Artist

Ed Ruscha (born 1937, Omaha, Nebraska) has made pioneering work in the media of painting, printmaking, drawing, bookmaking, photography and film since 1958. Associated in the early 1960s with the Ferus Gallery, Ruscha was included in Walter Hopps’ landmark Pop art show New Painting of Common Objects, at the Pasadena Art Museum in 1962. Transforming words into icons and images into wide-screen epics, Ed Ruscha has wholly reconceived the terms of painting for our era. Tagged variously as a Conceptualist, Pop artist or latter-day Surrealist, Ruscha flouts category, or rather incorporates all categories, always surprising and experimenting with both subject and method. His paintings are steeped in our times: cinema, advertising, logos, late capitalism and the twists and turns of postwar art have all informed his iconography since the early 1960s, arriving on the cool surfaces of his canvases with magnetic detachment. Ruscha eschews process and focuses exclusively on the final product: “the means to the end has always been secondary in my art,” he has said. Ruscha has also reinvented the use of words in art, finding disquieting ways to invest language with a weird, throbbing, ambient static, never aspiring to what he calls “word gestures,” since “each word is an excursion unto itself.”

Characteristically, Ruscha layers text over his imagery presenting deadpan, ambiguous statements or questions. ‘Thinks I, To Myself’ follows his celebrated exhibition of new paintings ‘Extremes and In-Betweens’ (Gagosian Gallery, 2016) where the artist stencilled phrases over images of monumental mountain ranges. This new work’s text appears to be racing past the viewer, perhaps a reflection on the rapidly moving, turbulent climate in Ruscha’s home country. It takes its title from the 1827 book by Edward Nares, described as a ‘a serio-ludicro, tragico-comico tale’.

“Thinks I to Myself has always sounded vaguely Shakespearean. I have been saying it for years. But upon researching, I see it coming from an Edward Nares book of the same title (1812). But with the mysteries of language, it could possibly be traced back to the Bard.”
